Shane absolutely idolizes his older cousin. When they’re together, Shane will tag along after him with an expression of such complete devotion and awe. Up until recently, however, my nephew was more often annoyed than enamored with his younger cousin. I’m sure he felt as though Shane was always underfoot, always getting in the way, always interfering in his play.
Shane accidentally knocks over his cousin’s block structures as he attempts to “help.’
He impulsively grabs — and runs away with — his cousin’s Bakugan or Pokemon toys.
He inadvertently demolishes his cousin’s Lego creations.
In all honesty, it’s completely understandable why my nephew is just not as eager to play with Shane as Shane is to play with him.
That’s why my sister-in-law and I were both so over-the-moon happy (and a little bit teary-eyed!) as we watched our sons playing together at the lake last weekend.
They worked together to excavate a deep hole in the sand.
They worked together to collect pails of water from the lake.
They worked together,
and enjoyed a memorable afternoon together.
