The Great Outdoor Challenge

April 21, 2010

I love when you start clicking on links on other blogs, and as you’re exploring the bloggy universe, clicking on a link here, checking out a blog roll there, you stumble across an inspiring, new-to-you blog.  That happened to me yesterday.  I don’t remember how exactly I found it, or what links I clicked to get there, but I found myself checking out 5 Orange Potatoes, and signing up at the tail end of her Outdoor Challenge.

The challenge itself is very simple:  in honor of Children and Nature Awareness Month, get outdoors with your child every day during the month of April, rain or shine.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I get outdoors with Shane often.  We go on little hikes, run around on the beach, explore local playgrounds, and even just play in the yard.  We get plenty of time outdoors…but I have a confession to make.  I post about the good days, the “nice” days when the sun is shining.  The not-so-“nice” days…well, we tend to stay inside.

Coming across the Outdoor Challenge was that little kick in the pants I needed.  There’s no reason why we can’t manage to get outdoors every single day, especially this time of year.  A little rain won’t hurt us — both Shane and I have rain boots and raincoats.  What’s the worst that could happen?  We get soaked, laugh about it together, and come home to change into warm, dry clothes.  What’s the best that could happen?  Adventures.  Discoveries.  Memories.

And the promise of a wonderful nap time later that day.

Count us in!

Yesterday’s outdoor explorations:  Heading out on our favorite local walk.

Signing “water” — Shane discovered a small gurgling stream just off the trail.

A budding naturalist?  He sat in this spot for eons, closely investigating this one clump of grass.

I don’t know who Roja was, but love that this bench was dedicated to
someone who loved the outdoors, and this particular spot, just as much as we do.

PhotobucketSince I have only just come upon this challenge, I’m giving myself an extension, and will participate through the end of May, in order to make daily time outdoors — rain or shine — a new habit for my son & I.

The weather is beautiful here in Arizona almost year-round (all except the summer) so we go out almost every single day…even if only for 15 minutes in our backyard. 🙂

Good for you to extend it through May. Thank you for sharing.
