My 101 in 1001 List
The Mission: Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria: Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days? Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

My 101 in 1001 list:
(I’ll bold items as they are completed, italicize items that are in progress, and link to the relevent post if I choose blog about a particular goal).
1. Write a living will for myself.
2. Decide upon a legal guardian for my son if something were to happen to my husband & I.
3. Write a will with my husband.
4. Ensure that we have adequate life insurance in case something happens to either my husband or I.
5. Finish Christmas shopping before December 1st for a change!
6. Celebrate a “Hand-Made Christmas” and have at least 50% of the gifts I give be handmade, whether by me or someone else.
7. Update my address book.
8. Organize digital photos, save the good ones, delete the bad ones, and back up the “keepers”
9. De-clutter & organize our bedroom…and keep it de-cluttered and organized for at least one month*.
10. Gather and organize copies of all important documents, and make photocopies to store at my parents’ in case of an emergency.
11. Make time to write again — write three short stories, even if just rough drafts.
12. Successfully participate in NaBloPoMo.
13. Print and bind each year of blogging into a book.
14. Learn how to use my camera on the manual setting.
15. Enter at least one of my photographs in a contest.
16. Organize my pictures into albums, scrapbooks, and/or storage boxes.
17. Take at least one significant (frame-worthy) photo a week for a year.
18. Complete and submit at least ten DITL entries.
19. Find a church that feels right to me.
20. Join in a protest or rally for a cause that I am passionate about.
21. Research a subject I know little about.
22. Create the soundtrack of my life.
23. Complete our honeymoon scrapbook.
24. Finally start (and complete!) my son’s baby book.
25. Create a Christmas scrapbook and make pages to represent the 2008 & 2009 holiday seasons, and up date each year after the holidays are over.
26. Learn to quilt and complete one quilt.
27. Make at least 30 homemade cards for birthdays or other occasions*.
28. Learn to use my mother-in-law’s old sewing machine. Make skirts for myself and actually wear them during the summer!
29. Learn how to sew cloth diapers for my son (or his future sibling).
30. Make a homemade Mei Tai for myself…and a child-sized one for Shane to use for his teddy bear!
31. Felt thrift store wool sweaters and reuse to make Christmas stockings.
32. Participate in the Morsbags project. Make and give away at least 25 reusable bags*.
33. Try at least two recipes from every cookbook I own. Give away cookbooks I don’t/won’t use.
34. Try at least one recipe from every cooking magazine that comes into my house each month. Throw away magazines that have no recipes worth trying.
35. Learn to make spaghetti sauce – from scratch.
36. Learn to set up jellies and jams.
37. Learn to make homemade yogurt.
38. Learn to bake yeast bread.
39. Learn to make homemade mozzarella.
40. Compile a family recipe cookbook.
41. Pull our ice cream maker out of storage and actually use it! Make homemade ice cream at least once a month*.
42. Plan a meatless meal one night a week for 10 weeks*.
43. Plan a crock-pot meal one night a week for 10 weeks*.
44. Participate in a CSA.
45. For one month, participate in the 100-Mile Diet — Eat only fresh, local, & unprocessed foods for at least one month*.
46. Wear a swimsuit without making a degrading comment about my body.
47. Take a dance class (bonus points for something unique and out of my comfort level, such as belly dancing or strippercise!)
48. Enroll in a yoga class.
49. Go to the dentist.
50. Change eating habits and begin exercising more, in order to ultimately reach my goal (pre-baby) weight.
51. Phase out plastic food storage containers, and replace with safer, more ecologically sound alternatives.
52. Go an entire month without using disposable products such as paper towels or Ziploc bags*.
53. Get rid of all of the clothes that no longer fit me/I no longer wear – either find a way to repurpose them or donate to charity.
54. Dress nicely everyday for at least a week (that means not relying on my usual uniform of baggy t-shirts or sweatshirts and beat-up sneakers!)*
55. Purchase a great bra that actually fits right (and does not have nursing clasps!)
56. Buy a drool-inspiring pair of boots…and actually wear them out and around!
57. Purchase an item of clothing at a thrift store, and alter it to turn it into something perfect for me.
58. Purchase a great piece of furniture dirt-cheap at a yard sale or thrift store and refinish it.
59. Find a toy box on Freecycle, Craigslist, or at a yard sale to refinish and use as a bench/shoe storage inside our front door.
60. Create a play kitchen for Shane from a second-hand entertainment center.
61. Create an assortment of felt play food for that kitchen.
62. Purchase art from a local artist.
63. Set up a three-month Food Storage.
64. Put a car emergency kit in the car.
65. Read 100+ books.
66. Read 20 of the books on The Modern Library 100 Best Novels list that I have not yet read.
67. Join a book club.
68. Keep track of every book I read during the 1001 days, blog about those that made an impression on me.
69. Decide upon a future career path. Research what steps I need to do take in order to peruse my chosen career, decide upon a plan to follow, and figure out a timeline to follow in order to eventually achieve my goals.
70. Go on a whale watch.
71. Learn to drive a stick shift.
72. Go wine tasting, actually pay attention to what I like, and purchase some.
73. Explore a cemetery.
74. Dance in the rain.
75. Go to a drive-in movie theater.
76. Try using henna on my hair and spend time as a red-head.
77. Visit a Renaissance faire.
78. Go tent-camping someplace other than just to the campground where my parents spend their summers.
79. Climb Mount Chocora.
80. Hike a trail on Mount Washington (actually reaching the summit is not the goal…although if it’s at all possible that would be incredible!)
81. Hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
82. Wake up after midnight to view the Perseid meteor shower in August.
83. Swim outdoors in the winter.
84. Build a snowman!
85. Host at least one play-date in my home a month, whether it’s with my mom’s group, an individual friend, or my sister*.
86. Plan a special date night with my husband once a month for one year – even if we aren’t able to leave the house*.
87. Sell something on eBay or Craigslist.
88. Try to locate and get back in touch with the German exchange students whom I stayed with in high school.
89. Finally discover where in Ireland my ancestor Patrick McGlue emigrated from.
90. Write thank you notes for Christmas & my birthday*.
91. Give blood.
92. Volunteer my time with at least one charitable organization*.
93. Raise over $1000 (total) for the March of Dimes walk with Ava’s Angels.
94. Write a letter to thank someone who has positively impacted my life.
95. Make regular entries in my gratitude journal (at least one entry a week)*.
96. Take someone’s advice that I would have typically dismissed.
97. Put together care packages for troops serving overseas.
98. Hand-write a letter to someone once a month for 6 months*.
99. Write to 10 letters to managers that praise an employee for good service*.
100. Do an anonymous random act of kindness for a complete stranger.
101. Do an anonymous random act of kindness for someone I know…and don’t ever let on that it was me.
* Starred goals have a either a number of times or a time period stated, but the ultimate aim is to make them a lifestyle change or a permanent habit.
I began this list on Janurary 1st, 2010,
and have until September 28, 2012 to complete these goals.
